The ferry, named KMP Tunu Pratama Jaya, sank in rough seas about half an hour after leaving the port of Ketapang in East Java late on Wednesday, Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency said in a statement.
The ferry was heading to Gilimanuk, Bali, about 50 kilometers (30 miles) from Ketapang, the statement said. At the time, there were 53 passengers and 12 crew members on board. There were 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks.
Rama Samtama Putra, police chief for the city of Banyuwangi in East Java, told AFP that four bodies had been recovered. 23 people were rescued alive. Many lost consciousness after being adrift in the rough sea for hours.
Nine boats took part in the rescue operation throughout the night. However, rescue workers had to continue their operations while battling 6.5-foot-high waves in pitch darkness.
